In a dramatic ending, the Illinois Patriots staged a comeback win over the
Chicago Whales by the count of 7 to 5.
Illinois erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
plating 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Tyler
Soderstrom started the rally when he delivered a base-hit. Jackson Holliday
stepped into the batter's box and he lined a single. One out later,
Heriberto Hernandez then belted a three-run homer making Illinois the victor
and beginning a joyous home town celebration. Chicago out-hit Illinois 12 to
8, but Illinois ended up with more runs.
Kyle Finnegan(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3
innings. Pete Fairbanks(0-3) was tagged with the loss in relief. He allowed
2 runs and 2 hits in 1/3 of an inning.
Finnegan and Michael Busch were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after
the great come from behind victory. As Ryan Calabrese noted, 'A win like
this one can do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy -
the fans, the players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen
runs!'
