Chicago wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning with 2 runs on 3
hits. D.J. Lemahieu led off and started the attack as he delivered a single.
Gerrit Cole then uncorked a wild one that found its way to the backstop.
Marcus Semien got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on
strikes. Charlie Blackmon was the next batter, but he struck out. Cole then
let a pitch get away from him. Matt Chapman added to the rally and blasted a
two-run home run. Chicago finished with 10 hits while Vernon ended up with
6.
Masahiro Tanaka(6-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and
allowing 2 runs. Cole(8-5) was the loser. Although losing the contest, he
whiffed 11 batters in 7 innings.
