Paul Goldschmidt smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Jose Fernandez racked up
an impressive total of 12 strikeouts as the Detroit Iron Gloves defeated the
Chicago Colts by a score of 5 to 3 at Edsel Stadium.
Goldschmidt enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He lofted a solo-blast
'downtown' in the 2nd inning and blasted a two-run home run in the 6th
inning. Although they lost, Chicago did out-hit Detroit 12 to 7.
The win was credited to Fernandez(4-4) who went 6 innings allowing 3 runs.
Fernandez got help from Jonathan Papelbon who earned his 8th save. Mark
Buehrle(12-6) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 5 and 2/3
innings of work.
Fernandez was jubilant in the hometown clubhouse, 'It was a lot of fun out
there. The fans gave me a lot of support as did my teammates. We got the
victory and I'll sure take 12 strikeouts anytime!'
