Max Scherzer carried a no-hitter into the 9th inning and Jhonny Peralta hit a
homerun and had 4 RBI at Long Grove CG where the Vernon Hillbillies beat the
Yuma Desert Rats 8 to 0.
Peralta provided much of the offense. He lined a single scoring a run in the
2nd inning, smashed a two-run homer in the 4th inning and lashed a one-base
hit bringing in a run in the 8th inning. Vernon finished with 14 hits in the
victory.
Scherzer(1-0) was credited with the shutout, his first of the year. The
right-handed Scherzer lost his chance for a no-hitter when Matt Carpenter
doubled with two outs in the 9th inning. Marcus Stroman(0-1) took the loss.
He was unable to control the Vernon offense and allowed 8 hits and 3 walks in
2 and 2/3 innings.
Scherzer was jubilant in the hometown clubhouse, 'It was a lot of fun out
there. The fans gave me a lot of support as did my teammates. We got the
victory and I'll sure take 13 strikeouts anytime!'
