Justin Verlander allowed just 4 hits as the Yuma Desert Rats defeated the
Nimrod Numnuts in 10 innings by the score of 3 to 2 at the ballpark.
Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Yuma
prevailed in the 10th inning. Tony Campana lined a base-hit. Brian Anderson
then called for a steal which was successful. Torii Hunter then drew a walk.
Matt Kemp followed, but he was set down on strikes. After another out,
Carlos Quentin came up and he was walked intentionally to load the bases.
Daniel Descalso added to the outburst and delivered a single making Yuma
victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. Yuma totaled 9 hits on
the night.
Verlander(14-11) allowed 2 runs on the game. Anthony Varvaro(3-1) was given
the loss in relief. Mark Salzwedel lamented, 'Verlander was really
aggressive tonight. He kept coming after our hitters. Heck, why not. he
kept sitting our guys down one after another - like so many bowling pins!'
