In a thriller the SSB Tar Heels staged a dramatic comeback over the Tombstone
Huckleberries winning by a score of 8 to 7 at Angels Stadium.
SSB erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning plating
2 runs on 3 base hits. Angel Pagan kicked off the action when he drew a
walk. After an out was recorded, Melvin Mora came to bat and delivered a
base-hit. Derrek Lee then stroked a one-base hit. Cody Ross followed next
and he lined a base-hit. Tombstone was not lacking for run support as they
scored in 5 separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to
forget that pitching is also needed to win ballgames.
The victory was credited to Tony Sipp(1-0) who went 2 and 1/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Jose Valverde(0-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. He
pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing 3 hits and 1 walk.
'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for you,' Pagan noted. 'It was looking
pretty dim there for a while, but we just kept plugging away and it really
paid off in spades! And it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the
end!'
